Types of Utility Trucks

Utility trucks are larger than small and medium-sized trucks but smaller than the small full-sized trucks. A good example of a utility truck is the Ford F350. These are workhorses that can carry anything from fairly ordinary tools on their beds to entire mobile cranes. Utility trucks come in many shapes and sizes depending on the intended usage. Classification is often dependent on their bodies. Some of the more common ones are:

Standard Bodies

A standard body utility truck has two compartments on the sides of the truck bed for storing tools and equipment. The center of the bed is empty just like that of a standard truck.

The standard body is the most common type of utility truck and is often used to carry heavy objects on its bed. The bed is constructed of aluminum for cost-effectiveness, weight savings, and rust avoidance.

Landscape Bodies

Landscape body trucks also lack side storage. This is removed to make way for a large dump truck-like bed.

Landscape bodies lack the hydraulic hoists that are used to tip out the contents of dump trucks. Instead, the contents of the dump truck-like bed are “dumped” by opening a door at the back of the bed and letting them fall out.

Steel Bodies

Steel body utility trucks are functionally identical to standard body utility trucks. The main difference between the two types of trucks is in their construction. Steel bodies use steel while standard bodies are made of aluminum.

Platform Bodies

Platform body utility trucks often have side storage removed in order to create space for a flatbed. These trucks are often used for the transportation of heavy equipment.

Crane Bodies

Crane bodies carry a mobile crane on the bed while still retaining the side storage for tools and equipment.

Enclosed Bodies

Enclosed body utility trucks are more or less identical to standard body utility trucks save for the enclosure of the bed. This makes them resemble vans. They still have side storage.

Dump Bodies

When you install a dump body on the bed of your utility truck, it becomes a dump body truck. The side storage is often retained in dump bodies.
