Cylinder Head Resurfacing

CALL US : 775-242-7209
There are a few reasons that might necessitate the resurfacing of a cylinder head:
  • The head gasket may fail completely and totally especially after the engine blows a gasket.
  • A desire to improve the compression ratio after repairs or milling.
  • A desire to improve the finish of the cylinder head.
  • The installation of some aftermarket intake manifolds requires to resurface the cylinder head for compatibility.
  • A cylinder head may be bent completely out of shape due to normal pressures of use like corrosion, pitting, and scratching.

The motivation behind resurfacing your cylinder head is irrelevant. What matters more is that the resurfacing is done right. Heavy Equipment Repair Services Reno will do it right. Our technicians have extensive experience resurfacing cylinder heads from all kinds of manufacturers. We offer both in-shop and on-site repairs.

Why is Cylinder Head Resurfacing Required?

The smoother your cylinder heads are, the less your gaskets will leak. The smoothness of a cylinder head depends on your engine’s make and model, so the owner’s manual is a great guide to consult on this.

Is It Possible For The Finish To Be Too Smooth?

While cylinder heads are required to be generally smooth, there is such a thing as a cylinder head that is too smooth. Surface smoothness is measured in RA (roughness average). A lower number indicates a smoother surface and vice versa.

Most manufacturers recommend an RA value of 30, and some go up to 60. It all depends on your machine. The owner’s manual should give a recommended RA value.

If a surface is too smooth, it will cause the gasket to leak due to a lack of “grip.” If it’s too rough, it will result in a leak due to improper sealing.
