Boom Trucks

CALL US : 775-242-7209
A boom truck is a truck carrying a hydraulic crane, called a boom. The crane is mounted on the chassis of a commercial truck, usually a flatbed trailer, and operated from the cab.

Other crane classifications:
  • Fixed cab boom trucks
  • Swing cab boom trucks

Fixed Cab

A fixed-cab boom truck has a single cab i.e. the truck’s cab. This is the most common type of boom truck.

While the crane is mounted on the back of the truck, its controls are integrated with those of the truck, allowing the driver to control it from the cab. The immovability of the truck cab limits both the field of vision and the range of motion of the crane.

Swing Cab

A swing cab is a fully functioning mobile crane that just happens to be mounted on the back of a truck.

Its controls are not integrated with those of the truck. Instead, the swing cab boom truck is controlled by its own cab attached to the crane which allows for 360° motion.
Boom trucks are also classified according to their attachments and their intended usage.

Boom Truck Cranes

A boom truck is a truck carrying a mobile hydraulic crane, called a boom. The crane is often mounted on the chassis of a commercial truck, usually a flatbed trailer, and operated from the cab.

These truck-mounted cranes operate in a similar manner to conventional cranes, lifting objects with hooks. The main benefit of boom cranes is their mobility. Mounted on a truck, they can be transported anywhere.

Bucket Trucks

Bucket trucks are used to hoist workers into the air so they can perform tasks like repairing power lines. Besides the bucket in which workers are hoisted, their construction isn’t that different from that of the mobile cranes on boom trucks.
Another classification method of boom trucks focuses on their flexibility (or the lack of it). Under that we have:
  • Telescoping cranes
  • Articulating cranes

Articulating
Also known as a knuckle boom crane, the articulating crane has a segmented boom that can bend at various angles.

Telescopic
Telescopic booms have a single straight boom with no joints. This is the most common type of boom.

Boom Truack Maintenance

Boom trucks contain dozens of moving parts. Lubrication and regular maintenance is a necessity if you want to maintain peak operating capacity.

You should change the fluids of your boom truck at the following intervals:
  • Engine Oil: 250 hours
  • Automatic Transmission Fluid: 500 hours
  • Rear Differentials: 600 hours
  • Antifreeze: 1,000 hours
  • Hydraulic Oil: 1,000 hours
  • Power Steering: 1,000 hours
  • Standard Transmission: 1,000 hours

Checklist for Boom Truck Maintenance

All working components of your boom truck should be checked during maintenance to prolong peak performance and prevent inconvenient breakdowns.

Maintenance checks should include:
  • An inspection of all belts, hoses, and lines, including engine belts, fuel crossovers, water valves, and radiator hoses
  • An inspection of power steering lines and automatic transmission lines
  • Check battery connections
  • Check for excessive play in the power steering
  • Check the air pressure and inflation rate
  • Check the front axle and rear suspension for broken or cracked springs, worn bushings, or loose pins
  • Check the lights
  • Check tires for wear
  • Drain the air tank and perform a moisture test
  • Inspect brake shoes and drums for cracks, wear and tear.
  • Inspect the air horns
  • Inspect the windshield wipers and wiper fluid levels
  • Inspect the windshields
  • Inspect wheels and rims for cracks or other signs of damage
  • Leak checks in the engine, transmission, differential, power steering, or wheel seals.

Proper maintenance of your boom truck will save you thousands of dollars in costly repairs and lost business due to sudden breakdowns. We offer both maintenance and repair services at our shop. In the event of a breakdown, our Rapid Response Team is always prepared to offer roadside assistance.
